Amazon’s first Alexa-only shopping deals are starting to roll out

Amazon has already stoked the holiday consumption fire by rolling out a bunch of deals well ahead of Black Friday, but this weekend’s shopping opportunity comes with a giant catch: starting November 18 and running through the 21st, certain deals are only available if you order through Alexa, the voice-controlled virtual assistant that runs on Amazon’s Echo speakers and Fire TV products.

Over the next few days, if you ask Alexa "Alexa, what are your deals?" you’ll be able to order a variety of different products at a discount, including a Philips Hue LED lightbulb starter kit ($15 off), a Sphero Star Wars BB-8 bot ($40 off), a 10-piece All-Clad stainless steel cookware set ($130 off), a $60 discount on a TCL smart TV, and $50 off Amazon’s own Tap Bluetooth speaker. Amazon says that other deals, not yet announced, will be available throughout the rest of November and December.

A testment to Amazon's vision for voice shopping

Not listed in Alexa-only deals so far: guides to getting along with family this Thanksgiving, toolkits to dismantle the simulation we’re currently living in, cases of Amazon wine. However, the holiday season is long, and it is still early!

Alexa users have been able to order and re-order Amazon items by voice since the earliest days of the Echo speaker, and customers in certain markets have been able to make two-hour Prime Now requests through Alexa since July. But this weekend’s voice-shopping exclusive marks the first time that Amazon has granted Prime customers and Alexa users access to discounts that aren’t available through Amazon’s website or mobile app. It’s a testament to Amazon’s vision of Alexa as a legitimate shopping platform, and is also meant to incentivize Alexa users to at least try shopping through voice command.
