Some carrier exclusive phones are interesting, like the original iPhone on AT&T. Most others, however, tend to be less novel. The Asus ZenFone V is squarely in the later category, a device that boasts last year’s specs and almost nothing notable about it beyond the (admittedly cheap) $384 price tag.
From a design perspective, the ZenFone V looks kind of dull, and the bezels flanking the screen look painfully large compared to newer (and more expensive) flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S8, Essential Phone, LG V30, and iPhone X.
The specs are fine, if outdated
Things are equally uninspired when it comes to specs. The best thing that can be said about them is that they’re fine, if almost all a year outdated, with a 1080p 5.2-inch AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 820 processor, and 4GB of RAM. On the camera side of things, there’s a 23-megapixel rear camera with OIS, which seems like the most interesting part of the phone, but it’s also nothing groundbreaking. A 3,000mAh battery and a USB-C port round things out.
The ZenFone V is available as Verizon exclusive starting today for $384, or at $16 / month for 24 months.
